Local SEO Checklist for Service Businesses

By the Website Architech team3 min read

Local SEO helps people find your business when they search for what you do in or near a particular place. It applies to plumbers and dentists, but also to consultants, studios and online-first businesses that serve a specific city or region. This checklist covers the steps in the order that usually matters most.

1. Set up and complete your Google Business Profile

Your Google Business Profile is the listing that appears in the map results and beside your name in search. It is the single most important local SEO asset for most businesses.

  • Claim and verify your listing.
  • Choose the most accurate primary category, then add secondary categories that truly apply.
  • Fill in every section: description, services, opening hours, website and phone number.
  • If you travel to customers, set your service areas instead of publishing a home address.
  • Add real photos of your work, team and premises.

2. Keep your name, address and phone consistent

Your business name, address and phone number, often called NAP, should be written the same way everywhere: your website, social profiles, directories and listings. Small differences confuse search engines and customers.

3. Earn real reviews and respond to them

  • Ask every happy customer, right after the job is done, with a direct link to your review page.
  • Reply to every review, good or bad, in a calm, helpful tone.
  • Never buy or write fake reviews, and do not only ask customers you expect to be positive. Google's policies prohibit fake reviews and selectively soliciting them, and the risk is not worth it.

4. Build location and service pages on your website

Search engines need clear pages that say what you do and where. A page per main service, and where it makes sense a page per area you serve, gives each search a page to match.

  • Put the service and location in the page title and main heading in a natural way.
  • Write original content for each page. Copying the same text and swapping the town name does not help.
  • Include real details: examples of work, answers to common questions and how to contact you.
  • Embed your map and show your phone number clearly.

5. Add local structured data

Structured data is hidden code that tells search engines your business name, address, phone, hours and services in a format they understand. A website developer can add it to your homepage and contact page.

6. Get listed in trusted places

  • Bing Places and Apple Business Connect, alongside Google.
  • Genuine industry directories and your local chamber or association.
  • Your suppliers, partners and local organizations, where a link to your site makes sense.

Quality beats quantity. A handful of accurate listings is worth more than hundreds of low-quality ones.

7. Make the site fast and mobile-friendly

Most local searches happen on a phone, often when someone needs help now. A slow or awkward mobile site loses them. See our guide to Core Web Vitals for the basics.

8. Track what is working

  • Check Google Business Profile insights for calls, direction requests and website visits.
  • Use Google Analytics and Search Console to see which pages and searches bring visitors.
  • Add a tracked phone number or a simple “how did you hear about us?” question to forms.

Be patientLocal SEO usually builds over months, not days. Steady improvements to your listing, reviews and pages add up.
